The Masters Golf Tournament 2010 from a PR Intern’s Perspective

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Last month, I attended the Masters Golf Tournament 2010 atmasters_logo2 Augusta National, an occasion I eagerly anticipated not because I am a golf fanatic, but instead because of the media frenzy that surrounded Tiger Woods in the months preceding it. I expected a swarm of reporters and photographers to be camped outside of the gates, hoping to catch even the tiniest glimpse of Tiger. What I found was the exact opposite.

Having previously attended practice rounds of the Masters, I knew Augusta National would be strict about spectators and their behavior. The organization has a zero-tolerance policy in regards to cell phones and cameras, and even goes so far as to limit purse size. Needless to say, I showed up for Saturday’s round empty-handed and eager to see the greens and golfers, but still expecting some sort of chaos.

Even being fully aware of the endless restrictions, I was still surprised by the practically non-existent media turnout. In the long walk from parking to the security checkpoints, I did not see a single reporter. After entering the actual tournament, the only cameras were those of well-known and respected media outlets, such as ESPN, and even those were few and far between.

From a PR perspective, Tiger played his cards right. After months of staying out of the public eye, he returned to golf at the opportune time and place, to a tournament that is known for its stringent rules about behavior and media, where he knew he would not face embarrassing questions from disrespectful crowds and reporters. As for Augusta National, they upheld their reputation as an organization that does not tolerate contempt or poor conduct by directing all attention towards the tournament itself, not the personalities of those playing in it. A key factor in both of these outcomes was the extent of the media—or lack thereof—present at the tournament.

What: NTT America, a wholly owned U.S. subsidiary of NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) and a global IP network services provider, today announced Cody Christman, director of product engineering for NTT America, will speak on a panel at PTC’10, the 32nd annual Pacific Telecommunications Council (PTC) conference.

Who: Cody Christman, director of product engineering, NTT America, directs a team of senior engineers in designing products to meet strategic business objectives for the NTT Communications Global IP Network, which was the first Tier-1 network fully upgraded to run IPv6 and is one of the world’s largest commercial IPv6 networks. With real-world IPv6 experience, both architecturally and operationally, Mr. Christman joins IPv6 subject matter experts and leaders from around the world and will offer his perspective on the benefits of IPv6 during the PTC’10 roundtable “IPv6 The Next Big Bail Out: Will IPv6 Save the Internet?” on Sunday, January 17, 2010, at 9:00 a.m. HST.

Why: The theme of this year’s conference, Embracing the Cloud: Enabling Connectivity and Innovation, will explore the evolution of cloud-based services and their implications for strategies and business models in a rapidly evolving marketplace.
