AT&T Lagging While Others Lead on IPv6

Is AT&T behind on IPv6 deployment?

That’s one of the key questions facing U.S. government agencies and corporations as they scramble to deploy next-generation Internet technology ahead of the fast-approaching exhaustion of IP addresses using the current standard, known as IPv4.

Gap between IPv4 depletion, IPv6 adoption widens

AT&T says it has some IPv6 services available to its enterprise customers today, and that it will be ready with a suite of IPv6 offerings for its enterprise and residential customers before market demand arrives.

But IPv6 proponents, Internet industry observers and even some AT&T rivals are worrying that AT&T is a laggard in upgrading its massive network infrastructure to support the new standard. These sources say that any delay in AT&T’s support of IPv6 could impact the Internet infrastructure overall, as well as the competitiveness of U.S. e-commerce companies.

There’s no question that AT&T is taking a lower profile about next-generation Internet services than its rivals and hosting later public trials of IPv6 than Comcast and Verizon.

“I’m surprised AT&T is not talking about IPv6 more,” says Tim Winters, senior manager at the University of New Hampshire’s InterOperability Lab, which is a premier IPv6 product testing facility. “I haven’t heard of any vendors trying to get into AT&T’s network and needing to do IPv6 testing. We’ve heard from vendors making CPE or set-top boxes for Verizon and Comcast.”

DURHAM, N.H.–(EON: Enhanced Online News)–The University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL), an independent provider of broad-based testing and standards conformance services for the networking industry, today announced that UNH-IOL Senior Technologist, Jason Walls, will discuss developing certification programs for growth opportunities in the video services market at TelcoTV. In addition, representatives from the UNH-IOL will be on-site at booth #SP-154 to address how the laboratory is supporting the future of online entertainment by providing broad-based flexible testing services to cost effectively meet network interoperability requirements for the telecommunications industry. The conference, which is taking place November 9-11, 2010 at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, NV, is a major North American event designed to help telecom service providers explore all of their options while remaining focused on the bottom line.

“We are looking forward to the UNH-IOL’s participation as both a presenter at TelcoTV and host for our Standards Pavilion.”

Certification programs for the conformance and interoperability testing of products to new and existing standards are essential to the reliable, high quality and seamless service delivery of TV over broadband networks. In the session titled, “Raising Your Standards: Keys to a Successful Certification Program,” which will take place at the TelcoTV Theater in Exhibit Hall D on Wednesday, November 10 at noon, and again on Thursday, November 11 at 9:30 a.m., Mr. Walls will outline the fundamentals of creating a successful certification program, as well as the pitfalls to avoid. He will share the UNH-IOL’s deep experience partnering with standards bodies and industry forums on the development and maintenance of certification programs, as well as performing certification and pre-certification testing of products to standards. He will provide Standards Development Organizations (SDOs), as well as the companies that participate with them, insights and perspectives to guide future growth opportunities in the video services market.

In addition to presenting, Mr. Walls will moderate a series of presentations at the TelcoTV Standards Pavilion on Wednesday, November 10 and Thursday, November 11. The Standards Pavilion will bring together standards bodies and industry forums to address questions about industry standards and their implications, provide expert advice on which standards bodies to approach and examine key standards that have and have not been ratified. Participating organizations include the Broadband Forum, Home Gateway Initiative, HomePNA, MPEG Industry Forum and Multimedia over Coax Alliance. The UNH-IOL contributes extensively to technology standards development through participation in a variety of standards bodies and industry forums and is committed to neutral testing of open standards technology to ensure credible results.

“TelcoTV, now in its ninth year, provides a comprehensive overview of the changing telecom video landscape and helps telecom service providers to sort through a myriad of potential approaches to the video market and find the business case that enables them to not only compete in video services, but to make a profit while doing so,” said Carolyn Herr, show director for TelcoTV. “We are looking forward to the UNH-IOL’s participation as both a presenter at TelcoTV and host for our Standards Pavilion.”

The UNH-IOL offers a variety of testing programs, or consortiums, representing a collaboration of industry leaders in network equipment, test equipment and industry forums, as well as service providers. The UNH-IOL collaborative testing model distributes the cost of performing trusted, independent testing and validation through an annual membership. More information on the UNH-IOL’s entire suite of industry leading testing programs can be found at: http://www.iol.unh.edu/services/testing/.
